Traffic
forecasts have consistently shown the bridge to be a weak
congestion reliever for Genesee Avenue. The reason for this
is easy to grasp. The big "trip generators" in
North University City are the commercial and business sites
which lie along (or east of) Genesee Avenue: UTC, Costa
Verde, Eastgate, Renaissance, etc. Regents Road
is overwhelmingly dominated by residences. Thus, peak hour
commuter trips are predominantly "attracted" to
Genesee Ave.
While
the bridge would surely draw some peak hour traffic from
Genesee, traffic engineers forecast that the draw would
be weak. This is because afternoon commuters who now take
Genesee Avenue south are predominantly headed either south
or southeast. Regents Road, lying to the west of Genesee,
is in the wrong direction for the great majority of Genesee
drivers. Furthermore, in order to use the bridge, vehicles
would have to make left turns at congested intersections
at La Jolla Village Dr and Regents Rd, or at Nobel Dr and
Regents Rd. This results in an
inefficient flow of traffic.
