Origin
of trips on Regents Rd bridge
According
to the DEIR, the bridge would do little to draw traffic from Genesee
Avenue. The majority of the additional traffic on Regents Road would
be regional traffic, drawn from the freeways. Here's how to figure
this out. Look at the table of segment
ADT and compare the "no project" and "bridge
only" alternatives. For example, on Genesee Avenue between
Decoro Street and Nobel Drive, the projected volume is 40,800 ADT
with no project, and 39,800 ADT with the bridge in -- a difference
of 1,000 ADT. On Regents Road, the volume between Arriba Street
and Nobel Drive is projected to be 13,000 ADT with no project, and
22,800 ADT with the bridge in -- a difference of 9,800 ADT. Thus,
of those additional 9,800 ADT drawn to that segment of Regents Road,
only 1,000 ADT are drawn from Genesee Avenue. The remaining 8,800
ADT, being North/South-directed trips, are from the freeways (mostly
from Interstate 5, which is close to and parallels Regents Road).
The
bridge is most effective in relieving Genesee Avenue traffic on
the segment between Decoro Street and Governor Drive. But even there,
the draw from Genesee Avenue, about 9,500 ADT at best, is significantly
smaller than the draw of regional traffic from the freeways - 15,300
ADT. Why should we spend $30 million to take only 9,500 ADT from
this segment of Genesee Avenue? Widening Genesee Avenue itself would
result in a better level of service than the bridge!
