Traffic flow on Genesee Avenue

Throughout most of each day, traffic on Genesee Avenue flows freely through South University City. With its low density of signalized intersections and curb cuts, Genesee intrinsically has capacity beyond that of generic four-lane major streets. The graphs below show 15-minute directional volumes at two locations along Genesee Avenue (one at the Rose Canyon crossing, the other between Governor Drive and SR-52). One sees the prominent NB flow during morning peak hour, and a huge SB flow during afternoon peak. Typically, it takes about seven minutes to "crawl" from Nobel Drive to Governor Drive along Genesee during PM peak. Drivers in the SB queue glancing to their left invariably see virtually empty NB lanes.

Red curves are for northbound (NB) traffic; blue for southbound (SB) traffic. Light curves are for individual days; dark curves are three day averages. Raw data courtesy of City of San Diego, Department of Traffic Engineering.
