Genesee
Avenue at EB SR-52 ramp : intersection data
Many
people find it surprising to learn that only 37% of the southbound
afternoon peak traffic on Genesee turns onto eastbound SR-52. The
vast majority proceeds straight on Genesee Avenue, though to North
Clairemont. One reason for this is that Genesee Avenue extends south
all the way to SR-163, hence it is a very significant N/S route.
Indeed, this is why Genesee Avenue is identified as a transit corridor
in SANDAG's 2030 Regional Transportation Plan.
Nevertheless,
the relatively high volume (966 vph) of SBL vehicles during PM peak
at times overloads the single southbound left lane. The free northbound
right turn onto the ramp also creates unnecessary friction. The
proposed improvement would add a second SBL lane and eliminate the
free NBR, and should rescue this intersection from what is now unacceptable
peak hour service levels.
